Analysis: The right-hander gave up at total of four hits in his longest start since August 2014. Though he's 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA in his first four starts back from a two-year absence recovering from Tommy John surgery, Wheeler has held opposing hitters to a .220 average and has struck out 21 in 21 2/3 innings.

The oft-injured right-hander allowed three runs on four hits and struck out four while walking just one.
Analysis: Wheeler left the contest with the bases loaded and a 5-1 lead, then had his numbers inflated when Hansel Robles allowed a grand slam. Though he's posted a 7.45 ERA through two starts in his return from a two-year absence, he is showing signs of getting back to his pre-injury level of performance.

Analysis: On the positive side, the oft-injured right-hander did record four strikeouts while walking just one. Wheeler's long road back from Tommy John surgery will likely have some bumps, so those who drafted him will need to exhibit some patience.

Analysis: The Mets had initially ticketed Wheeler, who hasn't pitched in the majors in two straight seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery, for the bullpen in order to keep his innings down. Those plans changed, however, after Matz began experiencing soreness in his elbow that will send the left-hander to the DL. An 11-game winner for New York in 2014, Wheeler is expected to be on an innings limit of approximately 125 this season.

Analysis: ''His arm strength is there, and he feels good,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ''He got a little fatigued in that last inning. He's got to build that endurance up.''

He is competing with fellow right-handers Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo, who pitched well last season as the rotation broke down, for the final starting spot.
Analysis: ''It felt good getting back out there facing batters. It's another step closer,'' Wheeler said Wednesday after a live batting practice that featured approximately 20-25 pitches. ''(I didn't throw) 100 percent, but the feel was good, pitches were good. Still a little fine-tuning on the curveball, but that will come. I'm happy where I'm at right now.'' Manager Terry Collins said earlier in the week that the next step was for Wheeler to pitch in a simulated game.
