Vargas struck out seven, ending the game with a 4.03 ERA and 1.31 WHIP on the season.

Analysis: Though he was able to win a second consecutive start, Vargas still hasn't been able to completely return to his dominant first-half form. The 2017 All-Star still sports a 4-7 record and an ugly 7.40 ERA in 13 starts since the beginning of July.

Vargas struck out seven, ending the game with a 3.59 ERA and 1.30 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas' time as a bona fide ace appears to have been a short run. After going 12-3 with a 2.22 ERA over his first 16 starts, the surprise All-Star is 2-4 with a 7.15 ERA over his last eight. With another matchup with the Indians next on tap, he's looking less and less like a dependable fantasy play.

Vargas struck out seven, ending the game with a 3.45 ERA and 1.28 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas matched his career high with his 14th victory, also accomplished in 2012 with Seattle.
Aug. 9 9:59 AM PT10:59 AM MT11:59 AM CT12:59 PM ET12:59 ET16:59 GMT0:59 9:59 AM MST11:59 AM EST12:29 PM VEN20:59 UAE11:59 AM CT-Jason Vargas fell to 13-6, allowing six runs on eight hits and three walks in 4.2 innings, as the Kansas City Royals lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 10-3 on Tuesday. Vargas struck out three, ending the game with a 3.40 ERA and 1.27 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas was a Cy Young candidate at the end of June with a 12-3 record and a 2.22 ERA. He's since gone 1-4 with a 7.62 ERA to fall out of consideration. Control has become a big problem. He hit a batter and threw two wild pitches Tuesday, and Vargas has issued 17 walks in his last 35 1/3 innings.

Analysis: After posting a 2.22 ERA through his first 16 starts, Vargas has a 6.85 ERA in his last five.
July 29 9:15 AM PT10:15 AM MT11:15 AM CT12:15 PM ET12:15 ET16:15 GMT0:15 9:15 AM MST11:15 AM EST11:45 AM VEN20:15 UAE11:15 AM CT-Jason Vargas improved to 13-4, allowing one run on five hits and two walks in 6.0 innings, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Friday. Vargas struck out two, ending the game with a 3.00 ERA and 1.23 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: After beginning July with two bad starts, Vargas closed out the month by yielding three runs across 11 innings over his last two. Now one shy of a career high for victories, the All-Star makes his first appearance at Baltimore's Camden Yards since 2013 on Wednesday. Though 0-3 in four previous starts there, he's compiled a 2.76 ERA over those outings.
July 23 9:40 AM PT10:40 AM MT11:40 AM CT12:40 PM ET12:40 ET16:40 GMT0:40 9:40 AM MST11:40 AM EST12:10 PM VEN20:40 UAE11:40 AM CT-Jason Vargas allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk in 5.0 innings as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox 7-2 on Saturday. Vargas struck out two, ending the game with a 3.08 ERA and 1.24 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas wasn't bad in this one, but he clearly hasn't been remotely as good in July as he was over the season's first three months. The All-Star lefty is 0-1 with a 9.95 ERA over his last three starts and has surrendered 22 hits in 12 2/3 innings during that stretch. He draws a tough matchup next time out in a visit to Fenway Park.
July 18 9:15 PM PT10:15 PM MT11:15 PM CT12:15 AM ET0:15 ET4:15 GMT12:15 9:15 PM MST11:15 PM EST11:45 PM VEN8:15 UAE11:15 PM CT-Jason Vargas fell to 12-4, allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks in 2.2 innings, as the Kansas City Royals lost to the Detroit Tigers 10-2 on Monday. Vargas struck out four, ending the game with a 3.06 ERA and 1.22 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: The dismal performance came after Vargas was battered for six runs - including three homers - on eight hits and a walk in five innings at Seattle in his final start before the All-Star break. He did toss a shutout inning during last week's Midsummer Classic.
July 12 9:17 PM PT10:17 PM MT11:17 PM CT12:17 AM ET0:17 ET4:17 GMT12:17 9:17 PM MST11:17 PM EST11:47 PM VEN8:17 UAE11:17 PM CT-Jason Vargas allowed one hit without giving up a run in 1.0 inning as the AL All-Stars defeated the NL All-Stars 2-1 on Tuesday. Vargas did not strike out a batter, ending the game with a 0.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP on the season.
July 6 7:55 AM PT8:55 AM MT9:55 AM CT10:55 AM ET10:55 ET14:55 GMT22:55 7:55 AM MST9:55 AM EST10:25 AM VEN18:55 UAE9:55 AM CT-Jason Vargas allowed six runs on eight hits and one walk in 5.0 innings as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Seattle Mariners 9-6 on Wednesday. Vargas struck out four, ending the game with a 1.15 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas, who has a league-best 12 victories, saw his ERA jump from 2.22 to 2.62. Headed to the All-Star Game for the first time, Vargas had his worst performance of the season against one of his former teams. He matched a season high by allowing six earned runs, and the three home runs equaled the number Vargas had allowed in his previous six starts combined.

Vargas struck out four, ending the game with a 2.22 ERA and 1.12 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas became the first 12-game winner in the AL and notched his 12th quality start in 16 outings. He's 7-1 with a 2.39 ERA in his last eight starts.
June 24 2:18 PM PT3:18 PM MT4:18 PM CT5:18 PM ET17:18 ET21:18 GMT5:18 2:18 PM MST4:18 PM EST4:48 PM VEN1:18 UAE (+1)4:18 PM CT-Jason Vargas improved to 11-3, allowing two runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Saturday. Vargas struck out two, ending the game with a 2.29 ERA and 1.13 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas broke a tie for the major league lead in wins with the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw, who pitched later Saturday night. He's won six straight starts behind a 2.27 ERA and ranks second in the AL in ERA behind Houston's Dallas Keuchel.
June 18 7:10 PM PT8:10 PM MT9:10 PM CT10:10 PM ET22:10 ET2:10 GMT10:10 7:10 PM MST9:10 PM EST9:40 PM VEN6:10 UAE (+1)9:10 PM CT-Jason Vargas improved to 10-3, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks in 6.0 innings, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 on Sunday. Vargas struck out three, ending the game with a 2.27 ERA and 1.13 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas became the first pitcher in the majors to reach 10 wins. He's 5-0 with a 2.20 ERA in his last five starts.
June 14 9:59 PM PT10:59 PM MT11:59 PM CT12:59 AM ET0:59 ET4:59 GMT12:59 9:59 PM MST11:59 PM EST12:29 AM VEN8:59 UAE11:59 PM CT-Jason Vargas improved to 9-3, allowing one run on five hits and one walk in 7.0 innings, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the San Francisco Giants 8-1 on Tuesday. Vargas struck out six, ending the game with a 2.10 ERA and 1.09 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas keeps on rolling along during his terrific comeback season, as he's now won four straight starts while posting a 1.69 ERA over the streak and yielding two runs or less in each of those outings. It's the left-hander's ninth quality starts in 13 appearances in 2017.
June 8 8:50 AM PT9:50 AM MT10:50 AM CT11:50 AM ET11:50 ET15:50 GMT23:50 8:50 AM MST10:50 AM EST11:20 AM VEN19:50 UAE10:50 AM CT-Jason Vargas improved to 8-3, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk in 5.0 innings, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Houston Astros 7-5 on Wednesday. Vargas struck out five, ending the game with a 2.18 ERA and 1.12 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas has a 1.83 ERA during a three-start winning streak and now has a 1.81 ERA at home this season.
June 2 8:46 PM PT9:46 PM MT10:46 PM CT11:46 PM ET23:46 ET3:46 GMT11:46 8:46 PM MST10:46 PM EST11:16 PM VEN7:46 UAE (+1)10:46 PM CT-Vargas improved to 7-3, allowing seven hits and one walk in a complete-game shutout, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Cleveland Indians 4-0 on Friday. Vargas struck out three, ending the game with a 2.08 ERA and 1.10 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: The veteran left-hander tossed his first shutout in nearly three years.
May 27 5:06 PM PT6:06 PM MT7:06 PM CT8:06 PM ET20:06 ET0:06 GMT8:06 5:06 PM MST7:06 PM EST7:36 PM VEN4:06 UAE (+1)7:06 PM CT-Jason Vargas improved to 6-3, allowing two runs on nine hits and two walks in 5.2 innings, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Cleveland Indians 5-2 on Saturday. Vargas struck out two, ending the game with a 2.39 ERA and 1.13 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas did a good job of minimizing damage and getting back in the win column after losing his previous two starts, both to the Yankees. Though the Tommy John surgery survivor has had a sensational first two months, there are signs a regression could be forthcoming. Opponents are batting .303 with four homers off him over his last three outings.
May 22 7:00 PM PT8:00 PM MT9:00 PM CT10:00 PM ET22:00 ET2:00 GMT10:00 7:00 PM MST9:00 PM EST9:30 PM VEN6:00 UAE (+1)9:00 PM CT-Jason Vargas fell to 5-3, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks in 6.0 innings, as the Kansas City Royals lost to the New York Yankees 4-2 on Monday. Vargas struck out six, ending the game with a 2.30 ERA and 1.04 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas hasn't had much luck against the Yankees, who've reached the lefty for nine runs in 10 innings in handing him back-to-back defeats. He's 5-1 with a sparkling 1.01 ERA against all other opponents, which bodes well for a bounce-back in Saturday's visit to Cleveland.
May 18 8:46 AM PT9:46 AM MT10:46 AM CT11:46 AM ET11:46 ET15:46 GMT23:46 8:46 AM MST10:46 AM EST11:16 AM VEN19:46 UAE10:46 AM CT-Jason Vargas fell to 5-2, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks in 4.0 innings, as the Kansas City Royals lost to the New York Yankees 11-7 on Wednesday. Vargas struck out four, ending the game with a 2.03 ERA and 1.03 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: Vargas carried a 1.01 ERA into the game, but allowed as many runs in the fourth inning - five - as he had in his first seven starts combined. The veteran left-hander had his home unbeaten streak snapped at 10 games. ''He just wasn't sharp," manager Ned Yost said. Maybe Vargas's abysmal night shouldn't have been that much of a surprise. He's 0-6 with a 7.15 ERA in 10 outings - nine starts - against the Yankees.
May 11 1:38 PM PT2:38 PM MT3:38 PM CT4:38 PM ET16:38 ET20:38 GMT4:38 1:38 PM MST3:38 PM EST4:08 PM VEN0:38 UAE (+1)3:38 PM CT-Jason Vargas improved to 5-1, allowing three hits and one walk over 7.0 scoreless innings, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 6-0 on Thursday. Vargas struck out four, ending the game with a 1.01 ERA and 0.92 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: The major league ERA leader has allowed one or no runs in six of his seven outings this season. Over his last three starts, Vargas has given up one run over 19 innings. His 1.01 ERA is the lowest in the majors (at least 30 innings) at the end of play on May 11th since Colorado's Ubaldo Jimenez (0.93) in 2010. The last AL pitcher to be this low was the Royals' Zack Greinke (0.51) in 2009.
May 6 5:36 PM PT6:36 PM MT7:36 PM CT8:36 PM ET20:36 ET0:36 GMT8:36 5:36 PM MST7:36 PM EST8:06 PM VEN4:36 UAE (+1)7:36 PM CT-Jason Vargas allowed four hits and two walks without giving up a run in 6.0 innings as the Kansas City Royals lost to the Cleveland Indians 3-1 on Saturday. Vargas struck out six, ending the game with a 1.19 ERA and 0.98 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: The Royals wasted another outstanding start from Vargas, who left with a 1-0 lead. The left-hander has allowed one or no runs in five of his six outings this season.
May 2 8:16 AM PT9:16 AM MT10:16 AM CT11:16 AM ET11:16 ET15:16 GMT23:16 8:16 AM MST10:16 AM EST10:46 AM VEN19:16 UAE10:16 AM CT-Jason Vargas improved to 4-1, allowing one run on five hits and three walks in 6.0 innings, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Chicago White Sox 6-1 on Monday. Vargas struck out one, ending the game with a 1.42 ERA and 0.98 WHIP on the season.
Analysis: It's the fourth time in five starts in which Vargas has yielded one run or less while pitching at least six innings. The early-season surprise is now 3-0 with a minuscule 0.44 ERA in his three Kauffman Stadium starts, and he gets the Indians at home next time out.

Apr. 20 9:59 AM PT10:59 AM MT11:59 AM CT12:59 PM ET12:59 ET16:59 GMT0:59 9:59 AM MST11:59 AM EST12:29 PM VEN20:59 UAE11:59 AM CT-Vargas delivered another brilliant start to defeat San Francisco on Wednesday. The resurgent left-hander struck out nine while permitting just four hits over seven innings in Kansas City's 2-0 win.
Analysis: After missing all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery, Vargas has allowed only one run across 20 2/3 innings in winning each of his three 2017 starts. That's enough of a sample size for fantasy owners to fell confident using the 34-year-old in all formats.
Apr. 14 10:48 AM PT11:48 AM MT12:48 PM CT1:48 PM ET13:48 ET17:48 GMT1:48 10:48 AM MST12:48 PM EST1:18 PM VEN21:48 UAE12:48 PM CT-Vargas turned in a second straight strong start Thursday, when he limited the A's to four hits and a walk and struck out eight over 7 2/3 innings to lead the Royals to a 3-2 victory.
Analysis: After missing much of the last two seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery, Vargas seems to have regained his prior form in 2017. The left-hander threw six innings of one-run ball to defeat Houston in Friday's season debut He'll try to keep his excellent run going in an interesting matchup with San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner on Wednesday.
Apr. 8 9:24 AM PT10:24 AM MT11:24 AM CT12:24 PM ET12:24 ET16:24 GMT0:24 9:24 AM MST11:24 AM EST11:54 AM VEN20:24 UAE11:24 AM CT-Vargas held Houston to a run and six hits and struck out six over six innings while leading Kansas City to its first victory of the season Friday.
Analysis: Vargas, who returned from Tommy John surgery last September, got his first victory since June 8, 2015. ''Vargas was fantastic,'' manager Ned Yost said. ''We knew that getting him back gave us someone we could count on every fifth day.''
