STORRS, Conn. (AP) George Blaney has announced an end to his 43-year coaching career, retiring after 12 seasons as an assistant at Connecticut.
The 73-year-old's departure comes a season after his longtime friend Jim Calhoun stepped down as head coach.
Blaney stayed through the 2012-13 campaign in part as a mentor to first-time head coach Kevin Ollie, and helped lead the Huskies to a 20-10 record. He said Thursday he feels now is the right time for him to retire.
